Diarrhea
in Children
What
You
Need
To Know
Diarrhea is frequent
loose or watery stools. Your biggest concern
should be dehydration. If your baby is not losing
weight, then dehydration is unlikely. A ten
percent loss in weight is serious dehydration and
warrants medical attention. Without enough body
fluids, your
baby may be unable to maintain
adequate blood pressure and go into
shock.
There are various causes of diarrhea and
not all of them are serious. A change in diet, contaminated
water or a food allergy may result in
diarrhea. If your child has a serious intestinal
virus, her diarrhea may start with stomach aches
and vomiting.
There are some things you can
do at home to help your child. Give your child an
intestinal bacteria supplement (pro-biotics) to
replenish good bacteria and to kill off bad
bacteria. Provide a homemade electrolyte solution
consisting of 1 quart of clean water,
1/2 teaspoon sea salt, 1/2
teaspoon baking soda and 8 teaspoons of pure maple
syrup.
As an acupuncturist I will
use various methods to strengthen internal organs to
stop the diarrhea and prescribe a homeopathic
remedy.
